Investment Strategy

Investing for the long term

The aim of the investment strategy is to ensure that Essex Pension Fund has enough money to pay your benefits in retirement.

The Investment Steering Committee (ISC) is a decision-making committee which looks after the Fund’s investments. The ISC is a sub-committee of the Fund’s main committee – The Pension Strategy Board (PSB). The ISC approves the investment strategy for the Fund, including considering environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors to comply with its responsible investment strategy.

They also support the Government’s pooling agenda and are part of the Access Pool.

Each year, they share an investment strategy statement. They review where the Fund’s money is invested and has four core investment areas:

1

Long-term approach;

2

Diversification

3

Benchmarks; and

4

Active vs Index Tracking Management

Financial health check

Every three years an actuary carries out a ‘financial health check’ of the Essex Pension Fund. This is known as a full actuarial valuation. The most recent full actuarial valuation was as at 31 March 2022 and the results can be found in the Valuation Report 2022.

In the years between each full actuarial valuation, we carry out an approximate financial assessment of the funding to provide a summary funding statement. Find these in our forms and documents section.
